College teacher believes only the police and military should have firearms

The shooting in Colorado has once again provided the desperate anti-gun left with an opportunity to call for the confiscation of firearms and making the possession of handguns and “assault weapons” a felony.
Jay Parini, a poet and novelist, who teaches at Middlebury College, penned an op-ed for CNN on Monday.
Parini writes:
So let’s get rid of guns in this country, once and for all, making it a felony to possess a handgun or assault rifle. Over a period of years, illegal guns will gradually disappear. Guns don’t kill people, as they say. People who acquire guns — legally or illegally — do. And we should make it extremely difficult for them to get their hands on these weapons.
Liberals seem to believe that if guns are made illegal and confiscated from law abiding citizens, society will become less violent.

In 2009, twelve years after the Firearms Act of 1997 (in England) was passed, Daily Mail Online reported that Britain was “the most violent country in Europe.” They also reported that Britain’s home figures showed “the UK (had) a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and South Africa.”
In essence, the UK law made certain the British people cannot defend themselves against an increasing plague of violence and criminality.
For the college teacher Parini, the Second Amendment is insanity writ large and its advocates are lunatics:
How many more lives have to be ruined by guns before we finally take them away? And how often do we have to listen to crazy people (including members of the Supreme Court) telling us that the Second Amendment grants every American citizen the right to carry a weapon?
For a teacher, Mr. Parini unfortunately displays are remarkable degree of ignorance.
I suspect that the framers of the Bill of Rights have long since rolled over in their graves. They never meant that ordinary citizens, including crackpots, should be able to buy weapons meant for battlefields. The only people who should be carrying military-style weapons are soldiers and police officers.
In fact, the average rifle owned by a colonist during and after the Revolutionary War was on par with the muskets used by the British Army.
The founders Parini would have rolling over in their graves believed, as St. George Tucker wrote, the right to own firearms is “the true palladium of liberty.”
The possession of firearms in early America was uniformly considered “a natural right which the people have reserved to themselves, confirmed by the (English) Bill of Rights… for their own defense,” as “A Journal of the Times” declared in 1769.
“The great object is that every man be armed,” wrote the patriot Patrick Henry. “Everyone who is able may have a gun.”
Despite the wisdom of our forefathers, Parini and the liberals — brainwashed for decades by a tidal wave of anti-gun propaganda and hysteria — believe “There is no safety in gun ownership. Only threat.”
In the wake of every shooting by a psychopath or deranged individual on psychotropic prescription drugs, the liberals become more irrational and authoritarian, demanding their fellow Americans — those who understand self-defense is a duty — be disarmed by the state.
